Starting in early 1994, I worked for my first-ever newspaper, The Northern Student, the student newspaper at Bemidji State University, where I attended and received my bachelor's degree in mass communication. Over three years, I would be a staff writer, news editor, managing editor and editor. I wrote everything from news stories to feature stories to sports stories to opinion pieces. It was the greatest training ground a journalist could ever have, and I am grateful to the many talented people I worked alongside in my years at The NS.

April 26-28 the BSU tennis team heads to the University of Minnesota-Duluth for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship. The Beavers take with them a big head of steam as they have won their last eight matches.
Head coach Becky O'Keefe said BSU has a good chance of picking up for No. 2 seeds in the singles brackets and another two seed in the doubles match-ups.
"We have some No. 2 seeds that are undeniable," O'Keefe said. "And I have the numbers to show any coach who disagrees."
The Beavers take with them a 8-2 overall record and a 6-1 conference record. Their only conference loss being an early season loss to UMD 7-0.
O'Keefe said UMD will more than likely receive five of the six singles No. 1 seeds, and all of the doubles No. 2 seeds. The only other No. 1 singles seed should go to the No. 1 singles player from Southwest State University.
" I think the team has taken all of the winning in stride," O'Keefe said. "Some of the older girls are used to playing on teams that have not done so well. So, I don't think we are overconfident going into the conference matches."
"I want UMD to be overconfident, though," she said. "We're not, but we are hungry."
O'Keefe said the Beavers have changed their lineup a bit, and Moorhead hasn't faced this yet. She also said UMD intimated her team in the first meeting, and she said she does not think it is going to happen again.
"Our team is solid and capable of producing big points," O'Keefe said. "We'll have to wait and see what happens."
The conference championship takes place in Duluth at the UMD campus April 26-28.
