Northfield News column: Help us honor our unsung heroes

EDITOR'S NOTE: In June 2004 I began a new venture as managing editor of both Northfield News and Faribault Daily News. This column originally appeared in the Northfield News on Jan. 28, 2006.

Each year, the Northfield News produces a special edition that we call "Portraits." It's a detailed look into the lives of some of the special people who call Northfield home, and we do the piece to not only celebrate the tremendous talent and diversity of human spirit that we have living here, but we also do it to honor those who live among us and give of their time and talent to make this a better community. We do that with the beginning section of the publication we call "Unsung Heroes." There, we profile local residents who go above and beyond in helping their friends, neighbors and community through their kind acts. And we find these people through your generous help. As you may have seen in the newspaper, there have been ads running asking for nominations for unsung heroes from the community. And I am writing to again encourage you all to seriously consider nominating someone you may know from your neighborhood, church or another organization who is always giving of themselves and doing it for the sake of giving. This type of people rarely ask for any recognition for their acts of generosity and kindness, but we want to do just that. We know there are a tremendous number of people in this community who are unsung heroes, and although they don't do it to be honored, they deserve to be. So, please, take a minute, consider someone you may know who continually makes this a better community in which to live and exudes community spirit, and nominate them as an unsung hero. You can either find one of the ads that are running in the News, fill it out and return it, or you can contact me by e-mail at dbrooks@northfieldnews.com or 645-1116. Our deadline is approaching quickly and we need to have nominations very soon. Thank you in advance for your nominations; we appreciate your assistance in honoring our community's unsung heroes. Calling all sweethearts A week ago, I asked the community to share its love stories with us. The News is working on a special Valentine's feature about how local couples met and if it was love at first sight. I have received a few submissions, and I thank those of you who already have sent your stories in, but we haven't received enough submissions. Please consider sending us your love story. We want to tell the stories from a cross-section of the community, whether you're new to town or have been here for decades, we want to know your unique love story. Once again, please drop me a note at dbrooks@northfieldnews.com or give me a call at 645-1116. Faith page changes News Publisher Louie Seesz has mentioned several times that we have been working on a new format for our Faith page, which publishes each week on Saturday. Well, the new page will make its debut in our Feb. 4 issue, which is next week. We have been working to revamp the religious services listings that have appeared on the Faith page in the same format for years, and the new format will allow us to include more faith-based news on the page than we previously could. To accommodate the change, the Faith page will begin appearing in our A section each week, and we hope that will give it more visibility. In addition, the page will now include news briefs about happenings from our local places of worship and regularly will include faith-based news stories ... information we previously didn't have room for on the former Faith page. We hope our readers enjoy the change, and as always, if you have any suggestions for future faith-based news, please contact me. Readers also will notice that because of the new placement of the Faith page, several other regular pages will be moved into new places in the newspaper. Don't worry, we are not getting rid of any of the news you are accustomed to, it just may be appearing in a new place. The biggest change is that by moving the Faith page out of the B section, we'll free up space for news of a different sort. Readers who in the past may have never ventured into the B section because they weren't sports readers or classified hunters, will find new reasons to dig into the B section. Once again, the changes are being made to improve your newspaper, and feel free to send any suggestions for improvement you may have. -- Devlyn Brooks is the managing editor of the Northfield News.
