Little progress made in November Highway 2 fatal hit-and-run accident

I first started at the Bemidji (Minn.) Pioneer as an intern in the summer of 1996. That would begin six years as a news reporter, sports reporter and copy editor for a small, six-day-per-week daily newspaper in northern Minnesota. I wrote a large range of stories from multiple beats, to features to sports, my favorite being the coverage of the Red Lake Reservation High School basketball team named the Warriors. Here is a collection of my stories from my time at the Pioneer.

Little progress has been made in the investigation of the November hit-and-run collision east of Bemidji that killed an 82-year-old Northome woman, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Pansy McCarvill was killed when a vehicle struck her as she was trying to cross U.S. Highway 2 about three miles east of Bemidji on Nov. 18.

Witnesses to the collision said McCarvill had left her car parked in the crossover area between the eastbound and westbound lanes and was walking toward their vehicle, which was parked on the right shoulder of the westbound lane. She was hit as she was crossing the traffic lane.

State Trooper Harold Marty said Wednesday that no arrests have been made, and there are no current suspects. There was, however, a brief bright spot in the investigation.

He said the State Patrol seized a vehicle and ran it through several tests, but it turned out to be the wrong one.

"We thought it was the one," he said, "but it didn't work out."

Marty said they are still looking for a dark-colored pickup that might have had damage to its driver's sideview mirror or driver's side of the car. That damage, however, could now be repaired.

Authorities believe that McCarvill was struck and killed by something protruding from the vehicle, most likely a sideview mirror.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Minnesota State Patrol's Thief River Falls office at (218) 681-0942, or the Hubbard County Sheriff's Department at (218) 732-3331.
