I first started at the Bemidji (Minn.) Pioneer as an intern in the summer of 1996. That would begin six years as a news reporter, sports reporter and copy editor for a small, six-day-per-week daily newspaper in northern Minnesota. I wrote a large range of stories from multiple beats, to features to sports, my favorite being the coverage of the Red Lake Reservation High School basketball team named the Warriors. Here is a collection of my stories from my time at the Pioneer.

The Bemidji Police Department recovered some stolen electronic equipment and many audio cassette tapes Thursday believed to have been stolen at an apartment building on 30th Street Northwest.
Clint Landgren, manager of the apartments at 914 30th St. N.W., reported Thursday that a witness saw someone taking electronic equipment from one upstairs apartment and audio cassette tapes from another.
The witness was in a downstairs apartment when she heard a loud bang from upstairs, according to the police report. She went upstairs to investigate because her apartment is on the second floor, and she saw a stereo, television and other items stacked in a hallway outside an apartment. She also saw a person to into another apartment and slide a purple basket containing what looked to be audio cassette tapes into the hallway as well.
She then went downstairs to call and report the incident to Landgren, according to the report, and when she went back upstairs, the items were gone from the hallway.
Landgren later investigated one of the apartments, where he saw a broken door and stuff piled behind it.
When the police arrived, Landgren and the police investigated another apartment on that floor which was vacant. They found the electronic equipment and tapes in the apartment. the owners were notified.
