My newest musical addiction is a little slice of nirvana for lovers of acoustic, Americana and roots music. ... And I found it by happy accident.
Last weekend, we were doing a little painting on the outside of the house before we buttoned up the yard work for the fall. And normally, when working outside, I would be listening to my latest Audible book to pass away the hours. ... Especially during painting. Man, I hate painting! ... But that's a story for another day.
But, on this warmish fall day, I was in a pickle. ... My Audible app had been acting up for a couple of days, and after pressing play, the story would go for a few lines before it would just quit. I fussed with the app for some time before giving up because I was losing painting time. And so instead I opened up my Minnesota Public Radio app to find something to listen to. For those who are unaware, MPR offers up some killer musical streams in addition to their all news and classical music channels.
Well, once inside the app, I was rooting around for something a little different as classical music didn't seem like the kind of musical fix I was going to need to get me through a day of painting. ... So, with a few minutes of effort, I stumbled upon a healthy list of other musical streams that MPR provides, and found Heartlandradio.org. The description was what first grabbed me: "acoustic, Americana and roots." ... And then I listened for a couple of hours, and now I am obsessed!
I haven't the slightest clue who is responsible for pulling together their play list, but they are genius! Or at least, I hope it is a human, because I don't want to assign this level of compliment to a computer.
From new to old, upstart musician to legends, this station has everything you could want in acoustic, American and roots music. Johnny Cash and Wilco back to back. OK. ... George Jones sandwiched in between Pat Donohue and Fats Domino. Yep. ... Hank Snow, Asleep at the Wheel and Grain Thief. Got 'em all. ... There's no end to the greatness found on this stream.
I have been listening every chance I've had since Saturday. In fact, it's cutting into my book listening time, which is becoming a serious dilemma for me. So, I tell ya, if you have any interest in blues, folk, Americana, mountain, blue grass or acoustic versions of big hits, then you gotta tune it. You'll thank me. I promise.
And thank goodness for that happy accident when my Audible app didn't work for a day on Saturday!
