Our son who will be a senior this year has a handful of boys he's hung around with for years. They've gone to school and done homework together. They've played football together. They've been through tough times together. They've watched girlfriends come and go together. They've gotten jobs together.
Simply, they've grown up together. ... And they are so good together.
As an aside, we are lucky parents who have been drawn together as friends thanks to our boys as well!
We are lucky because these boys, while prone to some normal teenage boy shenanigans, have been so good for each other. And often their most exciting nights find them parked at one house, playing Xbox late into the night and chowing down on pizza.
Today, a memory of the boys from a year ago when they were staying at our house popped up in Facebook. And I had to chuckle.
These 16-year-old boys came up from downstairs for their normal late night snack, and like everything else they do, they had to make a game out of it. And out of the blue, a game of hot potato broke out in our kitchen and living room ... only the boys were using a raw egg.
I couldn't help but marvel at the shear joy they experienced at this simple stunt. And I thought to myself, we could be a lot worse off than having our boys at home, on a Friday night, playing egg toss in our kitchen. And I realized this was a small concern compared to what I put my mother through during my teenage years.
As the boys played on, I thought, I'll gladly clean up a splattered egg should one drop, over having to worry about where our boys are on a Friday night. ... I just wish it could last forever, as just a year later, the boys are around less and less. They are growing up, spreading their wing, and hanging with the parents on a Friday night is less and less appealing.
But, as this video popped up today, I remembered how lucky I felt that night. And I will cherish this game of hot potato (egg) forever.
