In the summer of 1995, I worked a three month internship at The Warroad Pioneer, which I'm sorry to say has since ceased operation. This was the first professional newspaper that I worked for in my career, and it turned out to be a wonderful experience. I had only worked at Bemidji State University's newspaper for about a year and half before landing the internship. At The Pioneer I gained experience in sports, feature, beat and government reporting. I designed pages, took and developed photographs and was responsible for community relations. The best part is that I remain friends with the owners nearly 30 years later.

Warroad will play host to yet one more busy weekend this Friday and Saturday, Aug. 11 and 12. With new contests and old favorites such as the annual "Run to the Lake" car show, Warroad will be hopping.
The action will begin Friday at 2 p.m. when fans may watch the collectors' cars roll into the Patch Motel to register for the show.
Warroad will get a preview of the cars on Friday as the cars "Run to the Lake" in a parade downtown.
During the "Run to the Lake" parade, the cars will be stopping off at Doug's Supermarket for a mini-show and shine Friday night. There will be an award given away to Friday night's winner.
There will also be a chance at the Patch Motel's parking lot Friday night from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. and a pre-registration drawing for $100 will be held for those who are entered in the car show.
Activities will begin early Saturday morning with Crazy Days Sidewalk Sales, starting at 8:30 a.m. in downtown Warroad.
Shoppers should bring their issues of the Warroad Pioneer with them as they cruise downtown. The lucky number, printed in the starburst at right, could win you prizes at participation stores.
A craft show, which will be held in the Olympic Arena will begin at 9 a.m. and run until 4 p.m.
Registration for the car show will begin at 9 a.m. and run until noon.
The annual parade of the cars in the show will take place at 11 a.m. However, spectators may view the cars as they are lining up at 10 a.m. in the Patch Motel parking lot.
The cars will drive a parade route which will begin in the Patch Motel parking lot and follow Highway 11 to Lake Street where the parade will turn east. The parade will go as far east as Fourth Avenue N.E., turning to go north one block and turning west once again on Steenerson Street. The parade will go west until Main Avenue where it will turn north and hook up with Taylor Road. It will circle Marvin's and return to the motel.
At 1 p.m. there will be a contest downtown for the ugliest and prettiest dogs. A bubble gum blowing contest will be held at 2 p.m. for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. The newest contest for this year's Crazy Days celebration will be the pizza eating contest, which will be held at 3 p.m.
The annual Paper Plate Drop for children will once again be held at 4:30 p.m. Each business participating will donate 25 paper plates which will have different prizes written on them. The plates will then be dropped off the Heritage Building in downtown Warroad. The children may then bring the plates to the appropriate business and receive their prize.
Food and concession stands will be spread throughout the downtown area all day. There will be everything available from hotdogs to cotton candy.
The high point of the car show will be Saturday's 4 p.m. "Show N' Shine." This is the big one, the reason the collectors come to Warroad. Ballots for the awards must be turned in by 5:30 p.m. to be valid. There will be a People's Choice Award, a Lady's Choice Award, a participant's Choice Award and a Mayor's Choice Award given.
Some of last year's entries were a '33 Chevy Coupe, '47 Chevy, '78 Corvette and a newer Z-28. So there will be cars for every taste, old and new. The contestants come from all over North Dakota, Minnesota and Canada.
The awards ill be given at 8 p.m. and the evening will culminate with music and a bonfire at 9 p.m.
The activities continue on Sunday as the cars are on display at the Patch Motel parking lot.
