Candidates file for elections in area counties

I first started at the Bemidji (Minn.) Pioneer as an intern in the summer of 1996. That would begin six years as a news reporter, sports reporter and copy editor for a small, six-day-per-week daily newspaper in northern Minnesota. I wrote a large range of stories from multiple beats, to features to sports, my favorite being the coverage of the Red Lake Reservation High School basketball team named the Warriors. Here is a collection of my stories from my time at the Pioneer.

While Beltrami County's Commissioner District 4 race drew five candidates, surrounding Cass, Hubbard and Clearwater counties found more subdued filing for county board races.

In Cass County District 4, incumbent Commissioner Erwin Ostlund did not file for re-election, leaving a two-candidate race between James Worcester and Joanne Pels, both of Walker.

Incumbent Commissioner James Demgen of rural Brainerd was the only person to file for Cass County District 2, assuring his re-election.

Incumbent Cass County Soil and Water Conservation District 1 Supervisor Thomas Kuschel of rural Sebeka is running unopposed, and incumbent SWCD District 5 Supervisor Harold Bruns of Walker is also running unopposed.

Hubbard County features one contested commissioner race and one unopposed race as well.

Incumbent Hubbard County District 2 Commissioner Richard Thorson of Park Rapids will face Dick Devine, also of Park Rapids. District 4 incumbent Commissioner Lyle Robinson of Benedict will run unopposed.

Both Hubbard County SWCD Districts 2 and 4 feature races and District 5 does not. Carol Berg of Guthrie and Brenda Halter-Glenn of Laporte filed for SWCD District 2. Timothy Becker of Park Rapids and incumbent Brita Sailer also of Park Rapids filed for SWCD District 4. No one filed for SWCD District 5.

Clearwater County races look much the same with only one contested commissioner race and one commissioner candidate running unopposed.

Incumbent Commissioner Dennis Fultz of Bagley faces opposition from James O'Bryan, also of Bagley, for the Clearwater County District 2 seat. Rod Skoe of Clearbrook will run unopposed for the District 4 seat, as incumbent Commissioner Clayton Steenserson did not file for re-election.

There will not be any contested Clearwater County SWCD races either. Incumbent Richard Payne of Leonard was the only person to file for SWCD District 3, and incumbent Leonard Stinar of Bagley was the only person to file for SWCD District 4.

There will not be a county primary for any of Hubbard, Cass or Clearwater counties. Filing for offices closed Tuesday.
